Customer Responses to our CSA program

One of our customers unpacks the weekly CSA box

2010

I LOVE MY BOX. The produce (and with this farm share you get a fruit every week as well as vegetables) is superb, the flowers beautiful, and the herbs fresh and savory. There are new recipes, in each box, to help you use your bounty. You could grow your own, BUT you could also support local, get a larger variety of fruits and veggies, and skip the time weeding and watering and play more. It's organic. You'll never want to eat another store bought carrot! Todd and I are signing up for our 4th summer. Oh, did I mention how much I love my garden box?!!

Katherine & Todd, Olympia, 2010
. . .

. . .thank you so much for the wonderful box last week. I realized, as I unpacked it, that I had missed feeling rich in vegetables. During the season, the contents of the box dictate what we eat. Without the box, I have to plan menus and that means I only buy the veggies I need. It's not nearly as much fun eating that way, I've decided. I'm making the pear recipe this weekend for a birthday party (although the pears in the box are long gone; they were exceptionally good). So, as always, thank you for being our farmers, protecting our foodshed, and inspiring us to eat well and locally.

I was pleasantly surprised when my 4 year old was "high fiving" and jumping up & down that "our farm" gave us spinach & salad greens. We just chuckle and give thanks to the farm.

Happy New Year Heidi and Mike! I just wanted to tell you how I miss the weekly box so much. It's such a gift to get that high quality produce plus the great recipes. Now I just don't know how to put a dinner together.

Heidi, just wanted to let you know that this week's box was the best yet, and we thought winter would not be as good. . . Escarole amazing, carrot, potato, beets and celery all have the best taste! . . .Having farm grown organic produce is a great treat to city dwellers in the summer, but in the winter it is just amazing. Thank you for what you do!

I've enjoyed many recipes from the newsletters this year. I made one or two of them each week. Thanks for taking the time to add recipes for each week's produce.

Thanks for doing such a great job this past summer with your sowing, weeding, thinning, watering, harvesting, boxing, delivering and all the other tasks that are required to make it all go smoothly. I appreciate the effort you all have made to get fresh and nutritious food into my body and mind. It's really hard to measure out and deliver the proper thanks you all deserve. If you ever have any doubts about the value of your mission, I hope this note of appreciation will tip the scale that leads to continued success, joy and prosperity for you all.

The farm has changed the way we eat. Our food is full of color now, and we marvel at the tastes that are new to us because the food is so fresh. We eat far more vegetables and more variety than we ever have. The beets and the cherry tomatoes are to die for! We talk about "the farm" and "the garden." Like we did any of the work!!

Just to say "Thank You!" for the wonderful fresh veggies you prepare for us each week. I so appreciate everything you do, right down to washing the veggies so nicely. Also, your recipes. It is so much fun trying new twists to old time favorite vegetables. I love it.

I appreciate the contribution you've made to my wife and I. We love the food; the way it looks, tastes and it feels like it is grown and packaged with a lot of consciousness and love. It is really fun getting our box each week. We look forward to it. It is as close as this city boy (grew up in LA) has gotten to the farm. Thanks.

We are new members of your CSA this year. We just received our third box of produce. I want to compliment you on the freshness and overall quality of the vegetables - there is nothing like really fresh veggies and fruit, and you just can't buy that in the store. . . .we love the food, and feel the strength of the living earth and your loving work in it when we eat it.

EVERYTHING in the box was just awesome!! I used the beets and bok choy recipes and invited friends over to share them and a salad with your ingredients and everything was a huge hit! I also sprinkled some balsamic fig vinegar over the strawberries and they were out of this world. Thank you ! I can't wait to see (and eat) what's in the box this week! I am so grateful that you do this - thank you again!

Oh sweet wonders of your fertile farm!! We had such a fantastic meal, laden with the fruits of your labors. I couldn't bear to eat anything but the freshest of veggies last night i was so excited to get my produce. This is our third year with a full share and am giddy with delight. The knowledge that i am supporting local organic farming just makes it all taste that much sweeter!

Love the website. It is fantastic to see all the photos of the farm and your beautiful family. I am also excited to hear about what you are planting. I have a little tiny raised bed in the front yard now. . . don't worry, I will still need my box! But it reassures me to know that I planted my carrot seeds at the right time.

The food you grow on your farm is just stunning and what a pleasure to see Natty growing up amidst it all. You are changing the world, one fabulous cauliflower at a time!
Peace and Happy Spring!

Just wanted to let you know how very wonderful this week's vegetables are! Everything we've tried so far has been absolutely delicious (especially the peas I decided I hated when I was a little girl after being served nasty yellow peas from a can). I should take this opportunity to tell you how terrific your veggies have been and how much we've enjoyed our box every week. We've tried vegetables that were new to us, and it certainly is nice, after 30 years of cooking dinners, to have some new veggies to experiment with!

I so [look] forward to the flowers every week. Beautiful veggies and beautiful flowers. A feast for the body and a feast for the soul. I was so impressed by the orderliness of the farm and pride of place. Hmm. I knew then that I was eating great and nourishing energy. Seeing the pursuit of excellence and then being able to share in its fruits is a rare privilege.

You. . . helped me to do something really important. A year ago in early August I started Weight Watchers for some significant health reasons and as of now have lost and kept off about 80 pounds and have been able to cut out a major amount of medication in my life. I definitely believe I never would have been able to continue through the tough times in the beginning without having the box to look forward to and the fact I needed to use the contents or I would feel bad if they spoiled. For that I'll always be grateful to you.

We have been enjoying our farm deliveries so much! All the produce has been so fresh and delicious. We made a cream of broccoli soup with the broccoli from last week that was fantastic, and I'm sure that it was mostly the quality of the main ingredient that made it so good. And I don't think I've ever eaten this much salad in my life!

Just wanted to thank you for last weeks delicious produce. I'm thrilled to see that we are getting your fabulous garlic today. There has been no store (or farmers market) garlic to compare. We thought the cherries last week were to die for. The strawberries were like candy, and sadly gone. Everything is gone good thing there's more coming today. Happy birthday to Natalina, it's been quite a year.

"Those are OUR strawberries!" Art exclaimed when he saw the box on Tues. As we relived cleaning up those fragile little plants, we were almost as proud as y'all must be for getting the season underway. This year, more than ever, we are enjoying produce; thank you for your hard work in making it happen; your resilience is inspirational.

Writing the last date for fresh produce on the calendar prompts me to write a brief note of thanks for another year enjoying the bounty of your farm. Your family and your beautiful produce are discussed over our dinner table so frequently that you are now threads in our family conversation. My Mother, who lives out of state, often asks me what vegetables came in the box, to better visualize what we're cooking and eating and sense the aromas of our table. Many thanks for your hard work and commitment to farming. We, the beneficiaries, are most grateful.

The Easter egg radishes made a colorful, crunchy addition to several salads. Your carrots are superb - so sweet and full of flavor. We enjoyed discovering Cippolini onions this growing season - quite wonderful caramelized as garnish to our Sunday night grill. Spectacular sweet corn. My favorite green is now Tatsoi - thanks for introducing me. Not to overlook Italian beans, yellow wax beans, arugula and the lettuces, basil & rosemary, etc., etc. Every box is full of treats.

Our daughter. . .left home for university this fall. We miss her. But you will be happy to hear that she shares your appreciation for the agricultural lifestyle . . .One of her ways of getting acquainted with her college town has been locating and shopping at the farmers' markets so she can supplement the dorm meal-plan with fresh local produce.

Best wishes to you and baby Natalina, and a bushel of thanks from our family to yours.

Thank you so much for all you do; it was so great to watch the kids totally consume the cucumber, green pepper and cherry tomato salad I made the other night and finish up the last wax bean, too. It makes such a difference to us all that we know where our veggies come from!

Getting my box was well, it was just like Christmas, only better -- this was full of things I could really use. Thank you. Everything looks fabulous!!! I can't wait to start making delicious meals from the fresh and wonderful looking vegetables. I only wish I wasn't going to friends for dinner tonight, I would have actually preferred staying at home and cook. A couple of the veggies will be somewhat new to us and I am excited about that. I have to say that I never have had kohlrabi before so I am anxious to try that. Also, escarole isn't a common green for me, although we love chard, kale, mustard and other greens. I tasted some of the escarole and it was wonderful and peppery. Anyways, I am so pleased with our box and cannot wait for the boxes to come. I also very much enjoyed your newsletter, it really showed how you feel about the produce you and your husband grow.

And Beyond. . .

I enjoyed our first experience with Boistfort Farm's CSA program. My entire family did. My husband doesn't eat vegetables well, but receiving a box each week was exciting even to him. . .My children thought it was the most wonderful thing that had happened to our family & would jump up and down and rush towards the box as soon as I brought it home. . .They were happy to try new vegetables and discovered they enjoyed more than they expected. . .We will definitely do it again!

I never thought I'd get so excited over vegetables and flowers but you were a very nice part of our summer! I looked forward to the weekly deliveries and seeing what I could cook from the organic treasures in that wonderful brown box. The newletters were informative and interesting. I really, really enjoyed such a gift from Nature and appreciate all the hard work both of you and your team put into giving us the best. Knowing that "voting with my dollars" for the local, ORGANIC farmer is also very satisfying. I have been telling everyone I know about Boistfort!

. . .

What brings us back:

  • Freshness of the produce.
  • Cleanliness and almost-ready-to-use nature of most of the vegetables (e.g. broccoli in the form of heads or florets; not much in the way of bulky or dirty stems to deal with).
  • Connection with the producer (aided greatly by receiving the Mike/Heidi musings about what's going on at the farm).
  • Variety (always fun to get those strawberries, raspberries, sweet peaches, fresh flowers, pumpkins, gourds and other "bonus" items).
  • Nice that each box usually provides an appealing mix of leafy vegetables vs. root vegetables, green vegetables vs. orange or yellow vegetables -- plus herbs, onions and/or garlic for seasoning.
  • At-a-glance list provided with veggie box (and also available online in the early AM, which helps me plan the delivery-day dinner menu).

Our family has thoroughly enjoyed eating the fruits of your labor. We've had many meal-time conversations about the produce, your farm, and food-related issues. It's a success if you can prompt teenagers to think and talk about such basic facts of life. The four of us are convinced, in a year of E-coli and salmonella outbreaks, that local food (if not home grown) will become increasingly important to our health and well-being. Thanks for making that possible for this suburban family.

. . .

Let me just say a hearty thank you to you both for providing a wonderful service! You've provided a lovely variety of delicious, tasty veggies all summer and fall and we love receiving the farm notes and recipes too. The open house was a fun opportunity to see the farm itself and feel like we really know where our veggies come from. The flowers are always a nice extra touch and make it seem special! Thanks for all your hard work and dedication - we feel lucky to have found you!

. . .

Thank you for such a wonderful experience. This is our third CSA group and by far the best. I cannot tell you how much we have enjoyed our veggies this season. . . We definitely are eating a much wider variety of veggies -- and more of them. I have even seen [my husband] go for seconds on veggies which is definitely a new phenomenon in our house.

. . .

Thank you both for everything. Every night we sit down to eat we list everything that is "from our farmers". The value of knowing where our food comes from... that it is local and fresh and organic is immeasurable. We'll be back next year. We have a lot to be thankful for.

. . .

Thanks so much for such a fantastic way to get organic fruits and veggies and for a way to support local business and growers!! We love every minute of it!!

I would like to thank you for the season of wonderful food. I have really come to look forward to Thursdays almost as if a present was waiting for me. . . THANK YOU for a wonderful season of great produce and informative newsletters. The recipes were a bonus. I've cooked a number of your suggested dishes and have been pleased. . . We've subscribed to numerous CSAs over the years and so pleased with yours. The produce is consistently incredibly fresh and tasty and in impeccable condition! The variety is wonderful.

Produce was OUTSTANDING!! Sometimes organic produce is unattractive and unappealing with too many bugs and too much damage from the bugs. Everything we received from you was superb. Our favorites were the cherry tomatoes, peas, corn, lettuce, and all of the fruit. Your newsletters are so friendly and informative and I always appreciated the recipes. It's obvious you're very proud of your farm--and you most definitely should be!! This was our first year as subscribers in your program and we very much look forward to participating again next year! Thanks so much for everything!!!

washing carrots, 2007

. . .Visiting the farm and hearing from an employee how well you pay your workers, I feel better about the price I pay. As a friend commented, the problem is not that we are paying too much for food, it is that most people pay too little for food. I deeply value eating food that is locally and sustainably produced, and I know the cost of corporate farmed produce is falsely low because the soil suffers and the workers are undercompensated.

. . .

I have loved the program. This is my first year. We ate WAY more vegetables than ever before and we all tried many new things. My kids are 12 and 14 and ate every single thing I made. I love that we are eating better foods and that we're supporting local farmers. When I couldn't' get through the whole box, I gave extra to folks at work, so I never felt it was wasted. I most appreciated your recipes. I could have used even more. I'm not a cook and most of the foods were new and I was way more likely to use them if I had some ideas of what to do with them. My most favorite discovery: beets. I adore them. I never had them before and now I know how to roast them and make soup. Yum. And the flowers are such a treat. Thank you for those.

. . .

Thanks for a great introduction to your CSA program. We really enjoyed the contents of the boxes each week and appreciate and thank you for all of your hard work keeping us healthily fed! Highlights were the flowers, peas, and berries. We will definitely be signing up again for next summer and look forward to our two winter deliveries. Thanks.

. . .

Every single vegetable, fruit, or herb you have supplied has just been at its very peak of flavor.

. . .

I think you guys do a tremendous job. The quality is outstanding, truly delicious. And I love being able to not only eat organic produce but support a LOCAL farm. YOU are the future of healthy eating. We want you to SUCCEED!! Also, our pick-up location is convenient. Emailing news works great. Looking forward to CSA again next year.

This is our first summer with Boistfort and I just want to let you know how wonderful it has been. We love your newsletter, the friendly girl at the Farmers' Market, and best of all, the wonderful flowers, fruit and vegetables. All so perfect and so clean too.

. . .

I can't tell you how much we have enjoyed belonging to this share. A whole new world of salads has been opened up to us- we have been creating the most delicious "kitchen sink" salad concoctions.

. . .

. . .we truly love being a part of your CSA. Thanks for all you do and for giving us an opportunity to feel more connected to the food we eat. P.S. I have never tasted carrots as good as yours and I'm just about incapable of eating carrots from the store anymore. Thanks. . .I think!

. . .

Today will be my 3rd box pickup, and I have to write you and tell you how pleased I am with your CSA program. I look forward to every Tuesday morning like it's Christmas Day to find out what's in the box. The vegetables have been top quality and just plain gorgeous (last week's pears were outstanding!). My husband is eating veggies he's never eaten before- he and my 4-year old son wolfed down both pints of the Sungold cherry tomatoes before I could eat more than 2, and he devoured the Swiss Chard from last week. . . Thank you very much for your dedication, the quality, and the program. I'm glad that I am able to participate.

When I'm sitting in my office, fully wired, but pretty disconnected from all things organic, I love reading about what's happening in the cycle of the farm and how the various veggies are coming along.

. . .

Thanks for driving -- thanks for planting, growing, tending, getting up so early and caring! The cabbage is supreme, the cauliflower is a supreme cloud!

. . .

I am happy to say that my plan to get my five year old to eat more veggies is working! Thanks to you hard work in the field, the generosity of the land to produce such bounty.

. . .

We have really enjoyed the wonderful selection of vegetables in each box. They are all so pretty and trimmed and packed nicely. We look forward to next season. You're great farmers!!

. . .

Thank you so much for the boxes. Your vegetables are the best I have ever tasted. I always look forward to the next one to see what's new and delicious.

. . .

your carrots ARE the best.

. . .

When we decided to branch out from our CSA (of 3 years membership), we looked you up. Have been truly satisfied since. ( We have been CSA members of at least 4 different CSAs for at least 9-10 years). . . Thank you for sharing your bounty! It is truly delightful! I tell people all the time about the concept of CSA as if it is the best thing since sliced bread. It is something that helps connect me to the dream I once had of farming and of a life more connected to the ground. I am happy for you that you are living that life, however muddy it is, and that we can connect with you in this way.

. . .

This is our first year participating in your farm. We have enjoyed your produce immensely. The care you put in to your work is evident by the quality of your produce, weekly notes, recipes. We are eating healthier and trying new vegetables. It is great.

. . .

We received a package on Friday at 10:21. Charlene delivered our son, and he's healthy as a beet. This was a home grown, organic baby, with the help of the farm! Thanks for the food.

. . .

Just wanted to say that, even with the wet spring, the produce is just wonderful. We did enjoy the broccoli, but everything has been just excellent. All the flowers are lasting so well, too. Thanks for your hard work.

. . .

We've really been enjoying your recipes on the newsletter. The frittata was great and while I was a little skeptical of including the rutabaga, I did as I was told. Not only made a wonderful dinner but we ate the leftovers for breakfast. . . twice! So see how you've changed our lives? We are eating rutabagas for breakfast! . . .another big thanks to you both. . .

. . .

I enjoyed our first experience with Boistfort Farm's CSA program. My entire family did. My husband doesn't eat vegetables well, but receiving a box each week was exciting even to him. . . My children thought it was the most wonderful thing that had happened to our family & would jump up and down and rush towards the box as soon as I brought it home. . . They were happy to try new vegetables and discovered they enjoyed more than they expected. . . We will definitely do it again!

our barn, restored! May 2010
  1. Produce arrived clean, and was of a size and quantity that would generally fit in the refrigerator if not in that evening's cooking pot.
  2. Ideas in the weekly farm notes on how to handle the produce and how to cook it were both friendly and useful.
  3. Connection with the producer was maintained through the notes, invitations to the August open house-and occasionally bumping into Heidi off-loading the truck at the end of HER long day:-)
. . .

Thanks for another great season.

. . .

We have been super delighted not only with the variety and quality of the boxes, but also the recipes and the terrific newsletters -- it is inspiring and energizing to read the pride one takes in one's work.

It's been like Christmas every week as I open the bulging box to find treasures galore. This is the first time that we've participated in a CSA and it's more fun than we dreamed!

We have long been vegetarians, so it is a real treat for us to use such excellent quality produce. Also, I thought I had used all the cooking combinations, but some of your recipes offer a pleasant new experience.

Every Thursday is a little like Christmas with weird vegetarian parents -- I hate it when [my wife] picks up the produce, because I don't get to unload the box and see, feel, and smell what we have that week.
